Young 17-year-old Sgt. Rufus Putman of Co. D, 2nd North Carolina Junior Reserves, was admitted to Goldsboro's General Hospital No. 3 on March 9, 1865, suffering from a gunshot wound. According to the hospital's "Register of Wounded," Putman, who was in a group of 35 others, was wounded in his "Right arm near wrist," and was later transferred to Raleigh.
Putman's Compiled Military Service Record fails to note any admittance to a hospital. The March 28, 1865 edition of the "Daily Confederate" (Raleigh, NC) lists the Clevland County native as present in the Fair Grounds Hospital (Gen. Hosp. No. 7, Raleigh), however, notes incorrectly that Putman was wounded in the leg.
